My New Hobby

While those of you who know me, know I love to cook, I've never ventured into the canning arena! Well now I have, and I think I may be addicted. I've been working on apples for the past week and have successfully canned a 1/2 bushel! While I'm definitely late in the season for other things, I'll be ready next summer!

How fun! I want to learn how to can. I'm already planning a tomato sauce garden for next summer.

Fun! We used to can lots of things growing up but finding the time with 8+ children is not easy! Glad you are enjoying it!

Sounds yummy!! My grandmother used to do a lot of canning. I never really wanted to take the time and wish I had. I would love to now, but now I'm working. I guess maybe in retirement for me! ha ha!! This summer if you get to canning plum jelly, I'll pay to have you ship me some! Have fun with your new hobby! Love you!!

I enjoy seeing my countertop full of canned "whatever." There is a sense of accomplishment that I don't feel with other things. It's an immediate gratification, but yet a planning for the future too. I just love to see "young people" (I can't believe I just said that! It makes me sound soooooooo OLD!) experiencing some of the things previous generations enjoyed.

I am super impressed!! Did you take a long nap when you were done?

It's not hard nor long, so I really didn't need to take a nap :)

The longest part was peeling, coring, and chopping apples which was actually pretty fast with certain PChef gadgets!

My new hobby is eating all of the canned apple varieties. Thanks for making all the yummy stuff. It's amazing how far 50 pounds of apples goes!!

Good for you Melanie! I, too, have always wanted to try this. I was always to afraid that I would do it the wrong way and end up with canned botulism. If only you lived closer, I would be sure to come over and learn right along with you...
